ST FRANCIS SCHOOL HALL LOFT CONVERSION

1995-1996 | Multi Residential | Surry Hills NSW | 1460m²

A 1924 heritage item of local significance, the St Francis de Sales Group School Hall School Hall was converted into 10 residential lofts. An innovative design solution consisting of a steel and glass chassis, the primary horizontal and vertical circulation system, was clipped to the side of the building to ensure full use of the warehouse floor space. This eliminated internal circulation maintaining the full scale of the interiors and ensured cross ventilation to all lofts. This acted as an elevated street which, also contains the private balconies. The loft interiors are gallery, live-work spaces with the existing structural elements carefully articulated in the composition of each space.
